The MUTCD only permits the use of purple signs for toll facilities that collect tolls by electronic tolling AND by registered toll road users. In other words, both conditions (electronic tolling and registration) MUST apply for a toll road to use a purple sign. The following table clarifies those conditions where a purple sign may be used.

TOLL COLLECTION PURPLE SIGN
Cash NO
Cash, Credit Card or Ticket NO
Toll payment only with a tag (or transponder) YES
Toll payment with a tag or cash NO
Toll payment with a tag, cash, credit card or ticket NO
Toll payment with a tag or license plate read NO

A purple sign may be used: at the entrance of a toll road or toll lane, in advance of a toll road or toll lane, at a toll collection point or in advance of a toll collection point. In those circumstances where toll lanes are separated by toll collection methods (e.g., cash lanes vs. electronic tolling) purple signs may be applied ONLY to those lanes that are dedicated to electronic toll collection by registered users.
