The MUTCD only permits the use of purple signs for toll facilities that collect tolls by electronic tolling AND by registered toll road users. In other words, both conditions (electronic tolling and registration) MUST apply for a toll road to use a purple sign. The following table further clarifies those conditions where a purple sign may be used.
| TOLL COLLECTION | PURPLE SIGN |
|---|---|
| Cash | NO |
| Cash, Credit Card or Ticket | NO |
| Toll payment only by a tag or transponder | YES |
| Toll payment with a tag or cash | NO |
| Toll payment with a tag, cash, credit card or ticket | NO |
| Toll payment with a tag or license plate read | NO |
A purple sign may be used at the entrance of a toll road or toll lane, in advance of the toll road or toll lane entrance, at a toll collection point or in advance of a toll collection point.
