The In-Street Pedestrian Crossing (Yield) sign (R1-6) and In-Street Pedestrian Crossing (Stop) sign (R1-6a) are standard signs that may be placed in the roadway at un-signalized crosswalks to remind users of laws regarding the right of way. 

These signs are very similar to, but not to be confused with the [[In-Street Schoolchildren Crossing Signs (R1-6b and R1-6c)]] that have a similar application but at un-signalized school zone crossings.

==Description==

Both signs are vertical and rectangular with the legend "STATE LAW" in black on two lines above a white panel. R1-6 features a YIELD sign above the word "TO" in black above a pedestrian symbol. R1-6a features a STOP and the word "FOR" above the same pedestrian symbol. 

==Color==

The signs have a black legend (except for the red STOP or YIELD sign symbols) and border on a white background, surrounded by an outer yellow or fluorescent yellow-green background.<ref>[https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009/part2/part2b.htm#section2B12, 2009 MUTCD, Section 2B.12]</ref>. 

==Sizes==

The [[2009_MUTCD|2009 MUTCD]] defines a standard size for both signs as 12" x 36" for single and multi-lane conventional road use.<ref>[https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009r1r2/part2/part2b.htm#table2B01 FHWA, 2009 MUTCD, Table 2B-1]</ref>.

==Mounting==

The 2009 MUTCD states that the In-Street Pedestrian Crossing sign shall not be post-mounted on the left-hand or right-hand side of the roadway, nor placed in advance of a crosswalk.<ref>[https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009r1r2/part2/part2b.htm#table2B01 FHWA, 2009 MUTCD, Table 2B-1]</ref> Because of the increased likelhood of being struck by vehicular traffic, these signs are typically mounted on impact resistant, flexible paddles attached to either a surface mounted or portable quick-release base.
